Every few weeks a client opens a call with the same sentence: "We think we need Microsoft Fabric." Sometimes they are right. Just as often, what they actually need is a cleaner Power BI model and two hours of data modeling. Fabric is a serious platform, and treating it as the default answer to every reporting frustration is the fastest way to overspend.

Start with the problem, not the platform

Before we talk about Fabric, we ask what is actually breaking. Slow reports? Numbers that do not match between teams? Data trapped in five systems that never talk to each other? The shape of the problem decides the tool, not the other way around.

Signs Power BI on its own is still enough

  • Your data lives in one or two sources that already export cleanly.
  • Refreshing once or a few times a day is good enough for the business.
  • The pain is mostly modeling and report design, not volume or integration.
  • You are comfortably inside Power BI's data limits.

Signs it is time to look at Fabric

  • You pull from many systems and constantly reconcile them by hand.
  • You need near-real-time data, or data science and engineering on the same copy.
  • Different teams keep building their own slightly different version of the truth.
  • Volume or governance has outgrown what a single Power BI workspace can hold.

Our rule of thumb

If the bottleneck is the report, fix the report. If the bottleneck is the data itself, that is when OneLake and Fabric start to pay for themselves. We always run a short assessment first, because the cheapest migration is the one you did not need to do.

Not sure which side of that line you are on? That is exactly what our free initial assessment is for.
